Kenji Mukai

Coaching Experience:

14 Seasons. Currently, he is the 1st assistant at Cal Poly Pomona (5th season). Three years at Mt. Sac Junior College Assistant Coach. In his first year at Mt. Sac, he helped the Mounties reach the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. For the 2006 season, his Mt. Sac team finished 2nd in the Conference. During the 2005 Bronco season, they shared the CCAA conference title. Most recently, he helped the 2008 Broncos reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II tournament. 4 years @Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Frosh & Varsity Assistant Coach: Assisted on 1997 CIF DIV-IVAA championship team and State Semi-Finalist. 1998 CIF CIF-DIV IVAA Semi-Finalist Team. 1 Year @ Cal State Northridge Women's Volleyball Program (NCAA DI). 1 Year@ St. Lucy's High School Freshman team.

 

Club Experience: 11Years @ San Gabriel VBC: 12-1 Head Coach, 14-2 Head Coach, 14-1 Head Coach, 15-1 Head Coach, 16-1 Head Coach & Asst. Coach, 17-1 Head Coach & 18-1 Head coach. 3rd year at San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club.
Highlights:  

This past club season, his 15Roshambo finished 2nd at the SCVA Junior National Qualifier and qualified for the National Championships in Miami, Florida. At the tournament, they finished tied for 5th in the 15American Division. His 17Roshambo finished 2nd at the SCVA Junior National Qualifier, and captured the Bronze medal in the 17American Division.

In the 2008 season, his 17Roshambo team qualified for the Open Division by placing second at the JNQ at the Southern California Qualifier and finished as the third best 17s team in Southern California. His 16Roshambo team also qualified for the Junior Olympics in the 16National division and finished in the top 15. They were in the top 15 for the Southern California region as well. It was the second time in his career that two of the teams that he has coached qualified for the Junior Olympics in the same season. For 2007 season, his 16Roshambo team finished 10th overall in Southern California, and finished with a bronze medal in the 16 American Division. In the qualifier season, his 16Roshambo team finished 2nd at the Colorado Crossroads and 7th respectively in both the Far Western and SCVA Junior National Qualifiers in the Open Division.

 

His 14-1 finished 28th in the (OPEN) Nation @ Louisville, KY. Junior Olympics, and finished 9th in SCVA. 15-1 competed in Nationals @ Salt Lake City. 2002 16-1 finished 2nd at Mid-East Qualifier in Indiana, competed in Nationals@ Salt Lake City, 2003 17-1 won SCVA Club Qualifier, finished 3rd at Far Western Qualifier in Reno, NV., competed in Nationals @ Atlanta, GA. and finished 11th in the club division. 2004 18-1 finished 13th in SCVA, finished 5th in Far Western Qualifier in the Open Division, finished 13th in National Division @ Houston, TX.  His 2004 16-1 team finished in Division 1 of the SCVA, and competed at Junior Nationals as well. His 2005 181 team qualified for the Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City in the American Division. In the 2006 season, his 18Roshambo team finished the SCVA season in Division I. In addition, they placed 3rd at the Colorado Crossroads in the club division and 2nd at the SCVA qualifier to qualify for the Junior Olympics in Atlanta.

 

Education Graduated from Loyola High School, BA in History @ Cal Poly Pomona, MA in Pedagogy @ Cal State LA.
Most Memorable Moment:  

"I would have to say, recently, winning a third game 33-31. That was just simply an exciting match to coach. That same tournament, down 5-8 in the third game, we came back to win 16-14 to advance to the final eight of the Junior Olympics." A few years back, our 18Roshambo team had to play the Mavericks of Corona in one match playoff to qualify for the Junior Olympics. Talk about pressure!"

 Tom Barbosa

Coaching Experience: 18 years overall.
Club Experience: Tom Barbosa has coached at San Gabriel Volleyball Club for 17 years. Tom has coached in both the 16s and 18s division at San Gabriel. During the summer, he coaches at the Regis University camps. He will be an integral part of the San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club. His club teams have qualified for the Junior Olympics numerous times.

Coach Tom has been named the Club Advisor. His role is to help train coaches and work with team players individually. His knowledge and leadership will help instill great coaching philosophy and technical skills.
Highlights: This past club season, Coach Barbosa's 13Roshambo team qualified for the Junior Olympics in Miami, Florida. At this tournament, they finished in the top 24 of the 13American Division. After starting in Division VI of the SCVA season, the 13Roshambo team moved up three divisions to make it to Division III. This was quite an accomplishment starting low and finishing in the top 48 teams of the region.

He has coached 6 teams to Junior Olympics, most recently the 16-1 Team which qualified for Houston, TX. Many of his athletes have played at the collegiate level. His 2006 16 Roshambo team finished 5th at the Junior Invitational in Minnesota.

Education J.D.- Law
Marital Status: Married to wife Mo for the last 25 years. They have a daughter, Tracy who also played for San Gabriel Volleyball Club.
Hobbies Volleyball and Golf
Playing Experience:  10 Years of Beach Volleyball (AA ranking), 3 years of club volleyball at UCI, 15 years of USAVBA, finished 3rd at Nationals in the 35 year-old age division.

 


Lisa Steenport

Coaching Experience: 19 Years of coaching. She was Head Coach at Imperial High School from 1986-1995. She is currently the Head Coach at Milken Community High School.
Club Experience: 11 Years @ San Gabriel VBC: Head Coach 18-2, Head Coach, 16-2, Head Coach 13-1, Head Coach 14-1, and Head Coach 15-1. In the 2008 season, Coach Lisa guided the 15Roshambo team to a 7th place overall finish in SCVA, and finished 11th in the 15American Division at the Junior Olympics. Lisa is currently an assistant director for the San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club.
Highlights: This past season, her 14Roshambo finished in the top 7 in the Southern California region for 14 and under teams. The 14Roshambo earned a gold medal at the Northern Lights Qualifier to earn a bid to the Junior Olympics. At the championships, they finished in the silver bracket, and finished top 16 overall.

In the 2008 season,her 13 Roshambo team finished in the top 3 for 13 and Under teams in the SCVA. In the 2008 season, that team finished in the top 15 at the Junior Olympics in the 13 National Division in Dallas Texas. Her Milken team finished 10th in Division IVAA. Her teams have won numerous Hertiage League championships. Her 14-1 team in 2003 qualified for the Open Division in Atlanta, GA. She has been named Coach of the Year in the Heritage League. She has coached four teams to the Junior Olympics in the 13s and 14s divisions. Her 14s in 2003 finished third at the Far Western Open division qualifier and third at the SCVA qualifier. In the 2005 Junior Olympics, her 14s team finished 9th in the American Division (first place in the silver division).

Hobbies Coaching Volleyball, racquetball, book club, and golf.
Playing Experience:  Lisa has played in the high school level and college club team.

 

   Toni Kathol

Coaching Experience: 7 Years. Toni has assisted in many club and high school clinics.
Club Experience: 6 Years @ San Gabriel VBC: 14-1 Assistant Coach and two years of assisting the 13-1 team. In the 2005 season, she coached the 12 BSN team to division three. This is the highest placement of a 12BSN team in San Gabriel! In the 2007 season, her 16-2 team finished in Division III of the SCVA.
Highlights: For the 2009 season, she was the co-coach of the 18Roshambo team which finished in Division II of the SCVA, and also won the Northern Lights Qualifier. At the Junior Olympics, they finished in the Silver Bracket (top 12). Her 18Roshambo team had 10 of 10 seniors commit to 4 year universities to play volleyball.

In the 2008 club season, she was the assistant coach for the 16 Roshambo and 17 Roshambo teams. The 17 Roshambo team qualified for the Junior Olympics in the open division. In addition, the 16 Roshambo team finished in the top 15 in the 16National division. The 17Roshambo was in the top 5 within the 17 and under teams in the SCVA division. The 16 ROshambo finished in the top 12 within 16 and Under teams. In that same season, the 16 Roshambo team finished 5th at the Colorado Crossroads in 16 Open, and 2nd in the 17 Open at the SCVA Junior National Qualifier. She has helped coach two 13 Roshambo teams to Junior Olympics. She participated in two CIF DIV IV semi-finals. She was named All-League three times in her career, as well as, two ALL-CIF honors. In addition, she has played in four Junior Olympics, her last in 2004, finishing 13th overall.

Education Graduated from La Salle High School, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2008. Currently, Toni is in graduate school pursuing a doctorate in psychology.
Hobbies Cats, collecting, volleyball
Playing Experience:  Four years at La Salle High School and just recently Cal Poly Pomona as a middle blocker. In the 2005 season, Toni helped the Broncos reach the NCAA playoffs and win the CCAA conference title. In the 2006 season, she was the 2nd leading blocker in the country for Division II and first in the CCAA for the same category. She was named 1st team All-Region and 2nd team All CCAA.In the 2007 season, the Cal Poly Pomona team finished 2nd in the CCAA and qualified for the NCAA tournament. She again, led the team in blocks. She was named 1st team CCAA and West Region 1st Team. 

 

Ernest Banaag
18 Roshambo

Coaching Experience: Coach Ernest Banaag has been a part of the San Gabriel Volleyball Club for the last 8 seasons. In the 2008 season, he was the 17-1 coach at Top Gun Volleyball Club. He is currently the head coach at Mayfield Senior School.
Club Experience: 9 Years at San Gabriel Volleyball Club and Top Gun Volleyball Club.
Highlights: This past season, Coach Ernest guided the Mayfield Cubs to a third consecutive CIF championship. In addition, they won the Prep League for the third straight year. He was named Coach of the Year for the 2009 Division IV.

For the 2009 season, he was the co-coach of the 18Roshambo team which finished in Division II of the SCVA, and also won the Northern Lights Qualifier. At the Junior Olympics, they finished in the Silver Bracket (top 12). Her 18Roshambo team had 10 of 10 seniors commit to 4 year universities to play volleyball.

In the last two years, Coach Ernest has captured two CIF titles at Mayfield High School. In addition, his Mayfield Cubs have won the Prep League two years in a row. His 2008 team finished in the very competitive Prep league with an undefeated record. This past club season, his Top Gun 17s team nearly qualified for the Junior Olympics at the SCVA qualifier finishing 3rd at the tournament. He was the assistant coach for the 14Roshambo and 15Roshambo teams, in which the 15U team qualified for the Junior Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In the 2007 season, he was the head coach of the 18Roshambo team at San Gabriel Volleyball Club. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the 17-2 team which finished in Division IV of the SCVA 18U division.

Hobbies Ernest enjoys playing golf on a spare time. He currently holds the "Top Gun Cup" which a group of Top Gun coaches compete for on the gold course. 

 

Otto Lacayo

Coaching Experience: 8 Years: Westridge High School Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach.
Club Experience: 7 Years @ San Gabriel VBC: In the 2009 season, Otto assisted the 18Roshambo team which finished in Division II of the SCVA, and also won the Northern Lights Qualifier in Minnesota to qualify for the Junior Olympics. He was also an integral coach of the training team for the SG ELITE. This year, Otto will coach the 15 Premier team.

 For the 2008 season, Coach Otto was the assistant coach for the 17Roshambo team which qualified for the 17 Open division in Dallas, Texas. In addition, they finished 2nd at the competitive 17Open JNQ in the Southern California region. He was also the head coach of the 16Otto Training team. H In the 2005 season, he was an assistant for the 12 Roshambo team which placed 5th at the Junior Olympics, and finished 1st overall in the SCVA region. He assisted the 16 Roshambo team which finished 10th in the SCVA and captured the Bronze Medal in the 16American Division.
Highlights: 17 Open SCVA 2nd place, 18Club 1st place at Northern lights, and other club tournament victories to add.His 12 BSN team took first in three SCVA tournaments in 2004. In the 2006 season, he was the top assistant coach for Westridge which won the CIF and Prep League titles.
Education Graduated from Loyola High School, and currently attends Cal State Los Angeles.

Playing Experience:  Otto played at Loyola High School and LAAC Volleyball Club.

 

Rebecca Honeycutt

Coaching Experience: Coaching Summer camps during the off season. She is currently the Head coach at Maranatha High School.
Club Experience: 6 Years with the San Gabriel Volleyball Club. This past season, Coach Becky's 15Premier team played in division two (2) of the SCVA for the 15 and Under division. Her team competed against many 15-1 teams from other clubs, and defeated them! For the 2007 season, Rebecca's 15-3 team competed in Division III and IV of the SCVA for the 15 and Under Division.
Highlights: Her 14 Roshambo team qualified for the Junior Olympics in the 2006 season, and competed in Division one of the SCVA 14 and under division. She also coached her Freshman team to a League Championship! In addition, she lead her team to the Gabrielino Tournament finals.

Highlights:

This past season, Coach Will had an outstanding season. His 12Roshambo finished 1st overall in the SCVA and captured a Bronze Medal at the Junior Olympics in Miami Florida. In addition, the 14Premier finished in Division III of the SCVA. This is one of the highest finishes for a Premier team in our club.
 

In the 2008 season, Will's 12 Roshambo finished 11th overall in So. Cal., and finished 7th overall in the Reno Festival Tournament.  His 13 Premier finished as the #1 13-2's team in So. Cal and #14 overall in the 13's age group.
 

In the 2007 season, he helped guide the 12Roshambo team to a first place finish in the Junior Olympics in the American Division. He also assisted the 13 Roshambo and 14 Roshambo to National 5th place finishes at the Junior Olympics.

Club Experience: This past season, Coach Vanessa was the assistant coach for the 15 and 17Roshambo teams which both qualified for the Junior Olympics.

Playing Experience:  She recently finished her four year career at Cal Poly Pomona. This past season, she was named to the 2nd Team All American team for NCAA Division II. She was named CCAA player of the week twice this seasson. Vanessa was All-West Region and All-Tournament player for the NCAA playoffs. The Broncos of Cal Poly finished 2nd in the tough CCAA conference, and finished runner up in the West Region NCAA playoffs. In the 2007 season, she was named Honorable Mention All American, All CCAA, and All West Region. She played her club volleyball at Top Gun.

Club Experience: She was a standout player at Burbank Burroughs high school. All-Glendale News Press, All-CIF player, and League MVP. She competed for the 16Roshambo team which took home the Bronze medal in the 16American Division. In the 2008 season, she competed at the Junior Olympics in the 17Open Division.
